We will plan for the new school year as well as have tons of fun! Hope to see all officers there! Hey, my name is Maya Mayernick. I am a junior at Vo-tech and currently I am out on co-op during shop. I work at Knoebels in their Flower Department. Right now, we are working on cleaning up all of the cabins and the park to make everything look nice for opening day which is April 25th, 2015. We do a lot of work outside, such as digging up the beds from last years flowers and getting the roots out, planting new flowers, and making sure everything looks good everyday. Not being in shop with everyone is weird, and I miss everyone but it's nice to be able to get out and get real world experience. Getting paid for "being in school" is pretty great too.
You made it this far in your discovery of pallet gardening, so… six points! The points don’t really mean anything, but it’s the thought that counts. So how about six facts about the lovely pallet gardens being made in your neighborhood Horticulture Department.
Author: Madison Wisniewski (Junior) Reciting the FFA Creed has become a rite of passage for members of the FFA. The five paragraphs represent the ideals of this great organization and speak to the spirit of American agriculture. Erwin Milton Tiffany wrote these famous words in the summer of 1928 and even though the words have shifted slightly throughout the years, the semantics remain the same. The future of American agriculture is bright because of the leaders that came before us and because of the leaders of tomorrow. Three of our future leaders are pictured to the left: Felisha Hill, Jessica Shiffer, and Tatianna Englerth. Those three individuals competed at the area Creed Contest which is part of the Public Speaking Career Development Event which was held today at the Luzerne County Community College. Columbia-Montour A.V.T.S. students competed against members from the Central Columbia, Danville, Benton, and Northwest FFA Chapters. Jessica Shiffer placed third overall and will move on to the regional competition held at The Pennsylvania College of Technology in mid-April. Not only did all of the students have to recite the five paragraphs word-for-word with the same passion that E.M. Tiffany evoked almost a century ago, but they had to answer a series of questions relating to the Creed and their part in American agriculture. All of the participants in today's contest deserve a huge congratulations for doing their best in that not so small task! The FFA Creed by E.M. Tiffany "I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds - achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years. I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil. I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so--for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me. I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task." : Hi, my name is Ben and I am a senior! The main purpose of today's blog is to tell you about some of the things we do and learn in our Horticulture class. I would like to tell you about our greenhouses. Even though it is winter outside, springtime is coming to our greenhouse. The last few weeks we have been busy getting ready for spring.by planting many new plants. We now have a greenhouse that is filled with plants and there are more to come. You will find an array of many different varieties. We have everything from annuals, house plants, flowering plants, vines, vegetables, herbs and lots of hanging baskets. Some of my favorite plants are osteospermum, verbena, new guinea impatiens, and geraniums. All of the students in shop pitch in and help out. We take turns doing all that needs done in the greenhouse. It is more than putting a seed or plugs into a pot of soil. You Must keep the greenhouse at a certain temperature. Plants need different fertilizers at different times so we learn all about fertilizing the plants. Sometimes we pinch the plants to make them grow out rather then up. One of the most important needs of all plants is to need water. I like to put potting soil into the pots but my favorite part is watering the plants by turning on a water hose or using a watering can. Is seems with proper care the plants grow overnight. I have learned many things in the Horticulture shop. As the greenhouse fills with plants, we known spring is right around the corner. And I think, we are all ready for spring! As you plan for landscaping and gardening, keep the Columbia-Montour A.V.T.S. Agriculture shop in mind for all of your planting needs. Starting May 1st, come visit our shop for our spring bedding plant sale! We hope to see you in May. Author: Ben Hendrickson (Senior) |
